- The Chime Tombs are a famous region on Bester.
Covering nearly thirty square kilometers, these badlands were carved
into fantastic shapes by wind and rain over tens of thousands of years,
when the Chime lands had a more active climate. For the last seven
thousand years, and likely for the foreseeable future, the region had
been completely quiescent. It is here, in passages carved into the
naked sandstone, some of which extend hundreds of meters long and deep,
the bodies of countless generations of Chime nomads have been interred.
Dismembered and bundled together in cloth sacks, these bodies date back
as far as the late Old Neighborhood Period, when the nomads first began
to move into the area. While their numbers today are few, as most
have moved to more urban areas of the planet and become integrated into
modern Bester society, burials still occur here. The Tombs are
stringently guarded by those that remain, and modern League and Empire
archaeologists have been imprisoned, and occasionally killed, by nomads.

- Gave rise to the Yamaso Daimyo, and empirical
polity that formed in the late Old Neighborhood Period. It came to
control several star systems within ten light years, and at least four
others out to 25 light years. These further systems had outposts
known as "out stations". The culture was known for its art and
poets, as well as its militaristic society. Its decline began in
the mid Middle Neighborhood Period, under pressure from both the
Kentauric Empire and the League of Worlds. By the Late
Neighborhood Period, all external star systems had been abandoned,
interstellar flight largely abandoned in favor of utilizing the ArcWays
for trade and commerce. Early in the Miogenic Period Yamaso Daimyo
had fallen as civil war and economic unrest swept the planet.
Eventually, with the aid of the League, the Island States of Tsunami
polity had been created, and the planet became a League member world.
Today, Tsunami is a very conservative society, known primarily for its
export of food stuffs grown in massive sea farms.

- Lyonesse is a famous in-system example of
pristine archaeological ruins dating back to the founding of the
original colony, during the Great Hegira. A small moon orbiting a
distant gas giant, from the surface there are only a few structures
present to hint that Humans had ever been present. However, the
entire moon is riddled with passages and compartments, as it had once
served as both a water ice resource, and later a scientific outpost.
Lyonesse was abandoned within two centuries of its founding, as the
colony on Hyannis became more and more insular, eventually losing the
ability to travel through the solar system. The moon, however, was
left intact, although when discovered it had long since lost all power
and environmental controls. It is doubly famous, however, for the
archaeologists' first discovery here: a chamber that had happened
to possess both complete maps of the entire complex, and a largely
complete manifest of what was to be found there, and where.

- This world is one of the furthest Yamaso Daimyo
out stations from their home system of 70 Ophiuchi. Although the
central star is a white dwarf, the Daimyo constructed its outpost here,
on the largest moon of the sole remaining planet, as a means to observe
the immediate Local Neighborhood covertly, via a system of multi-length
telescopes. As the planet moved in a highly eccentric orbit, most
of the time it remained at a large distance from the star, providing an
interference free environment for the telescopes to utilize. The
system was first colonized very early in the Middle Neighborhood Period,
but was abandoned by the Late Neighborhood Period as pressures from
civil wars in the home systems choked off funding and supplies.
The out station was abandoned quickly, with indications of all personnel
having left within a matter of days. Today the system remains
empty, watched over only by a small compliment of robotic survey probes.

- Chi-1 Orionis A - 28.26 - Cicero
- One of the original Earth colonies, little is
known of the world's history, or its eventual downfall. It is
reasonably certain that Cicero existed as a troubled colony, considering
the young age of the planet and the relative regularity that it suffers
major impacts, solar storms, and other side effects of its youth.
Cicero itself was originally slated for colonization due to the remote
discovery of large amounts of water in its atmosphere, as well as
sufficient amounts of oxygen. What was not realized, however, was
that there were forms of microbial life on the planet that existed as
vast mats of algae-like rafts, often several square kilometers in size,
floating on the vast oceans. These mats, Cicero's equivalent to
Earth's stromatolites, pumped out huge amounts of oxygen into the
atmosphere. Eventually, within a few centuries, it would reach a
high point and become toxic to the mats, which thrived on the large
amounts of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The mats would then die
off, and the oxygen levels would plummet. It was during one of
these high points that remote observations from Earth gave the
impression of a world ripe for Human colonization. By the time
that the colony arrived, the oxygen levels were falling rapidly.
Habitats were constructed on the surface, pressurized domes and
subsurface passages, which for a time fostered the people. During the
next few centuries, the establishment of the famous Cicero Catacombs
occurred, tombs which housed the dead. Little else was
accomplished, and the population eventually began to dwindle as
resources and technology began to fail. Combined with the
deleterious effects of asteroid and comet impacts across the planet, the
Human population finally vanished, sometime during the mid Hegemony
Period. It was not until the late Miogenic Period that an
archaeological expedition arrived on Cicero and began to investigate
this lost colony and its tragic history. Today, there remains a
small manned outpost of the surface, with a sister facility in orbit.
Transports regularly move between here and Pi-3 Orionis, a trip of some
ten light years.

- One of the original Earth colonies (the twelfth
sent out), the world today is one which is a study of tragedy.
Aside from the well known genocide of the native Khai species, the
original colony itself suffered greatly. Following its
establishment during the Great Hegira, it existed a continent away from
the Khai, and while they may have known about that species through
remote surveying, there is no evidence that the colonists and the Khai
ever interacted. The colony itself eventually settled down into an
agriculture-based society, which was stable for several generations.
However, by the end of the Commonwealth Period, a technological
advancement had taken place, establishing several cities on their
continent, connected by a well maintained road system. A new
industrial revolution was taking place, when religious zealotry seems to
have taken hold. Just as the people were set to begin exploring
beyond the shores of their continent, a theocracy was established which
severely restricted intellectual and cultural growth. This was the
state of the world when the Hegemony arrived via the ArcWay. The
ruling polity, called simply Aesir, disallowed meaningful contact with
the Hegemony, and immigration was forbidden. When the Dominion
came to power, they found it easy to take control of the government, and
to create a ready made Dominion ruling polity. The fall of the
Dominion saw a cultural collapse, the old polity being replaced by a
feudal system that relied on pre-industrial technology. The ArcWay
had long been blocked off, with an almost mythical fear surrounding it
thanks to the deprivations of the Dominion, and new growth was extremely
slow, until a series of scientific revolutions occurred during the
Middle Neighborhood Period. Within two or three generations, the
technological level of the society exploded, to the point of
establishing an industrial and power base which rested firmly on
steam-powered technology, and the extensive use of fossil fuels.
For nearly 600 years the society prospered, with expeditions traveling
throughout the globe, establishing colonies on various islands and
continents. At the height of their technological development, this
culture had begun to design simple, if cumbersome computer systems.
And then, abruptly, the entire civilization collapsed. It is
unknown why this happened, but it is obvious that within a single
generation the entire framework of the civilization fell apart. To
this day, the Human colonial descendents are confined to a single region
on their original continent, living in a series of small villages and
maintaining a population of some 100,000 individuals. When the
ArcWay was finally reopened towards the end of the Middle Neighborhood
Period, the League and Kentauric Empire explorers found a world that was
a mere relic of what it had once been. Both polities established
colonies on the planet, a major point of contention between the two
polities. The villages of the Phione peoples were largely ignored,
save by sociologists and anthropologists, although those people did
benefit from trade with outlying League and Kentauric colonies.
Little has changed in the modern age. While the Empire has faded,
the League has prospered, its Phione colony slowly growing into a
major center of travel and commerce. The original Human villages
have since consolidated into the Highlandic Thanedom, and control most
of the northern regions of their original colony. Conflict between
the League and these natives is common, and typically revolves around
territorial disputes. A movement to grant the Highlanders control
of all aspects of life on Phione IV has recently cropped up, gaining
more and more momentum as facts about their past on the planet have come
to light. Both nations study the long dead Khai. The League
is interested in their apparent Earthly origins and biology, while the
Highlanders have become enamored of the spiritual aspects of the extinct
species.

- A highly developed garden world, being a major
center of cultural and industrial exports. Named for the original
colonial landing site, on the western edge of a super volcano caldera,
the colony was initially powered by geothermal energy. However,
over the past few thousand years, the population and energy requirements
have grown to the point where geothermal energy is now a minor source of
power. Westrimm has had a varied history. One of the
original colonies from Earth, it was founded during the early portion of
the Commonwealth Period, and seemed to have had a relatively prosperous
history after that. However, a series of events lead to a period
of dark ages, resulting in the loss of technology. By the
beginning of the Old Neighborhood Period, Westrimm had recovered to the
point where it had begun to move back into orbital space. This
space race seemed to have sparked some major international competition,
however, which lead to a period of at least two century's worth of
strife and minor wars, collectively known as The Troubles in Westrimm
history. It was not until the Middle Neighborhood Period that
proper exploitation of the solar system had begun. Towards the end
of this Period, the Local ArcWay had been discovered, and Westrimm was
reunited with the rest of Humanity. Shortly thereafter, the planet
became allied with the League of Worlds as a series of loosely allied
planetary governments. Full League membership occurred in the Late
Neighborhood Period. Today Westrimm is one of the most prosperous
and active worlds in the League.
- Psi Serpentis A - 47.85 - Megiddo
- Founded as an original Earth colony during the
Commonwealth Period, little is known of the planet's early history.
What is known is that the world and system was eventually united under
the banner of the Megiddo Empire, and empire which developed an
interstellar drive and managed to colonize worlds in the Lambda
Serpentis, 18 Scorpii, and BK+00 2334 Systems. At its height
during the Old Neighborhood Period, the Empire made a definite
impression on the Arsemians of Lambda Serpentis, though the Megiddoans
maintained their holdings largely in orbit. At 18 Scorpii, their
presence was a bit more intrusive, hinting at the Empire's higher
comfort level when dealing with Humans. However, they remained at
neither of these systems for more than a few decades, being unable to
maintain any form of dominion while being so greatly separated from
their homes system. Their arrival and withdrawal from both of
these systems predated the opening of the local ArcWays, and thus the
Empire was known only through rumors and old tales by the time either
the Empire or the League arrived. Their holdings on BK+00 2334
were more substantial, having no indigenous people to contend with.
The colony here, in fact, survived right up until the eventual collapse
of the Empire, during the Middle Neighborhood Period. The Empire's
collapse was total, being fraught with resource depletion and civil war.
Today, Megiddo is a world lost in a feudal society, the highest level of
technology revolving around simple industrial manufacturing. All
spaceflight has been lost, and the days of the empire, even locally, are
little more than legend. Indeed, the existence of the Empire was
discovered only through the recovery and salvaging of an Imperial
Megiddo shuttle, left originally in a wide planetary orbit above Pangaia
at 18 Scorpii, and since ejected into solar orbit. An expedition
was launched and arrived at Megiddo during the last century, but despite
the system's relative closeness to both 18 Scorpii and Lambda Serpentis,
no follow up expedition has occurred. The Megiddoans continue to
exist as a feudal society, spread over two continents, their entire
universe now confined to their single planet.

- Initiated by a special interest group, this
colony was established in the mid Miogenic Period via a massive
interstellar sleeper ship, accompanied by a veritable fleet of supply
vessels. The religious group which backed the colony vanished from
the League, their aim to set up a self-sufficient colony on a world with
terraforming potential in the Regulus B system. The colony,
however, has never initiated contact with the League, and being
relatively isolated from any other colonial world, it is unlikely that
they will in the near future. There are no plans to investigate
this system, as it would involve a major interstellar flight with a very
large time debt.

- This system possesses the nearest black hole to
the Sol System, and has thus long been an object of scientific interest
to the League. During the latter part of the Late Neighborhood
Period, after the sudden reappearance of the Miogenics, following their
disappearance from the Local Neighborhood during the Middle Neighborhood
Period, all manner of scientific exchanges took place. Among these
was the ability, via the Miogenics ArcWay-like interstellar travel
capability (which has never been shared), to travel to this system.
The Miogenics had already established a heavily shielded outpost on a
distant planetoid, its sole purpose to observe the black hole. The
Miogenics themselves have long since ceased to be a common presence
here, save for repairs or upgrades to the outpost, but it is curious to
note that the Tsubar'ey have a presence here as well, and that they
willingly utilize the Miogenic travel methodology. This is curious
because of their near manic distrust and avoidance of all ArcWay travel,
leading many to speculate that the Miogenic "gates" are not related to
ArcWay travel at all. Today, the outpost remains fully functional,
and while recreational travel is restricted, a population of several
hundred League citizens is always present, along with their families.
The Miogenics technology is effective at protecting the outpost from all
activity coming from the black hole, and its companion blue giant star.
