The Encyclopædia Planetæ -- The Outer Systems

THE DISCOVERY AND ACTIVATION of the ArcWay network brought about a brief explosion in the exploration and charting of the Local Neighborhood. The ArcWays were found to have a well defined number of worlds to which they connected, and those new destinations were calculated and found to be known stars, most of which were visible to the naked eye. While many of these worlds had already been colonized by past efforts, many more were to be new frontiers for Humanity, and were located well beyond most previous attempts at colonization efforts. Very quickly these were designated the Outer Systems, and even after the Renewed Contact Program had ceased, the name continued to be utilized by the Hegemony, Dominion, and finally the League as extrasolar exploration and colonization continued.

The Outer volumes comprise a huge area, located within a distance radius that would encompass all of the prior regions completely. Even today, there are new star systems to be charted and discovered in the Outer Systems, and colonies that are established in this region are typically intensely undertaken projects, carefully planned and followed up upon. It is often said that the success and well being of the outer System colonies is an indication of the health of the League as a whole, and it is through many of these colonies that the key to space beyond is held.
