The Encyclopædia Planetæ -- The Mid Volumes

THOSE SYSTEMS WHICH COULD be reliably mapped and surveyed by astronomical means from Earth were located within some 50 light years away. For most of Mankind's push to colonize the stars, systems beyond 25 light years away were largely beyond reach due to the relatively slow speeds of the colonization vessels themselves. The longer the voyages, even with advanced hibernation or genetic revival systems, the riskier the venture. And beyond that fifty light year mark, not enough was known of the star systems to take that risk. This region eventually came to be known as the Mid Volumes, and marks a line in the early history of colonization. Today, it marks the center of the League's expansion.

Unlike the Core Systems, the Mid Volumes hold a huge number of stars, many of which remain unexplored, though mapped to some degree. The potential for discovery remains high in this region, and the amount of territory for new colonization is still quite high. It is through here that the Tsubar'ey are often found, on their great and stately migrations. It is here that relics from the ancient past are often found. And it is here that the Local Neighborhood still thrives, a busy suburb in the League.
