The Alpha Centauri Project First conceived of in 2076 CE and launched in 2101 CE, this so-called "Great Experiment" was established in response to the discovery of worlds within the Alpha Centauri System which apparently supported life. Three colonial vessels would depart for the three worlds, one in orbit of each of the Centauri suns, while a veritable fleet of support ships accompanied them. These colonies were indeed experiments, socially, culturally, economically, even religiously. And they also formed a foundation of sorts for the League of Worlds, serving as some of the most advanced societies to be found in the Local Neighborhood.

In the face of a planet wracked by climatological and ecological failure, many believed that should civilization on Earth fall then all of her outposts and colonies throughout the Solar System would not be far behind. The Sleeper Colonies made use of genetically induced hibernation methods in order to see the colonists safely to their destinations, star systems which had been confirmed, to various degrees, to possess habitable worlds. There were thirteen such colonies. Thirteen chances for Humanity's survival.

The Hegemony was young, and it was still tying together the failing centers of civilization throughout the Solar System. These seven colonies were put together with the various ideals that comprised the Hegemony itself, all programmed within AI-controlled ships. But there were no colonists per se; these ships were filled with the genetic material of Earth, which would be fostered and raised (at least in the first generation) by those AI's once the colony had been reached and its infrastructure constructed. The latter few colonies held Human advisors in hibernation, for a more humane touch, but for all intents and purposes, these would be entirely new Human societies, meant to prolong the ideals and concepts of the New Church and the Hegemony at large. Most of the colonies, however, had their own ideas.

That was until the advent of the ArcWays. When they were first discovered in 2808 CE via the wholly unexpected and shocking return of the colony ship from 82 Eridani, an entirely new chapter of Human exploration was opened up. Quite literally, the whole of the Local Neighborhood was placed within a footstep's reach, and a program of exploration and colonization was instituted. While not every ArcWay world was entirely suitable for colonization, the mere fact that they were so easily reachable made them targets of new community's by default. This was the founding matrix of the future League of Worlds, despite the fact that some worlds were more hostile than others. As were some of the previous inhabitants of those worlds.

colony established xxxx CE The Exile Colonies The low point in Human civilization was the establishment and tenure of the New Church Dominion. Run by paranoid and xenophobic men convinced that the Unity War was a taste of our future unless steps were taken, it quickly further devolved into a full despotism, where differences were not tolerated. As such, even those Humans who were different, be they different species, or even technologically enhanced in some way, were rounded up and placed within internment camps. These camps eventually began to receive dissidents and "malcontents", until finally such populations were in the tens of thousands. Rather than utilize Solar System resources to maintain these camps, most of which were isolated habitats within the Inner System, a series of extrasolar colonial sites were chosen, places of exile for those who did not fit within the predetermined society of the Dominion. But these colonial sites were not chosen with any care, and indeed for the most part they were selected with nothing but malevolence in mind. These colonists were being shipped of on ships of ancient design, to destinations were no form of life could possibly thrive. They were being disposed of, under the pretext of being set free.

Even as tied were being forged with those previous colonies established during the Hegemony, new ones were being founded by people willing to take vessels to systems not connected to the ArcWay network. However, a revolution occurred in 3114 CE when an ancient ArcBuilder device was discovered in the Kuiper Belt of the Alpha Geminorum System. Dubbed the ArcWay Construction Module, it was discovered to be an automated machine which traveled from system to system, constructing ArcWays. The discovery of how it operated, leading to the construction of further ACM's, opened up entirely new doorways into the Local Neighborhood. While the speed of the initial expansion remained limited by the sublight speed of the ACM's themselves, new avenues of expansion were opened simultaneously. System by system, the Orion Arm was becoming the extended neighborhood of Mankind.
